Pacifica District Soapbox Derby

Gentlemen … Start Your Engines!

Okay, so maybe we don’t have engines, but our racers have heart … and speed. Every July, Pack 1203 participates in the Pacifica District Soapbox Derby, held in El Segundo, where we pit our cars, drivers and pit crews against the best of the South Bay.

Race dates for 2014 are:

  • Workshop: Sat. June 21st. 1-4pm
  • Workshop: Sat. June 28th. 1-4pm
  • Workshop & BBQ: Sat. July 5th. 1-4pm
  • RACE DAY! Sat. July 12th!

And speaking of cars, we’ve got a pretty stocked garage – right now hosting four of the most styish racers you’ll see on the pavement. Our current roster is: (click to view)

Every year, the Pack holds a Soapbox Design Challenge where the scouts get to design their own racers. After that all the scouts and parents vote, and the top one or two winning designs get painted that year. (Each year, 1 of our cars gets a new look.) In the months prior to the race, we hold pit crew sessions where the cars are rehabbed, spruced up and the drivers put in days of practice.

The whole process is designed to involve the boys every step of the way: from design, to construction, on to practice, and finally to race. While not all scouts will get a chance to drive on the actual race day, this truly becomes a Pack event when everyone shows up to not only help as Pit Crew, but to cheer the cars on to victory!

While the Pack and District do everything possible to insure that the racing of these cars is safe, accidents, well … sometimes do happen. In those instances, the Pack honors those less unfortunates with a special award – The Purple Chassis Award.

To date, we’ve been lucky enough to have only one recipient of this prestiges honor … and we’d like to keep it that way. Congratulations to our 2011 Honoree – Asst. Cubmasster Jasanis (due to Brakeman’s Thumb).
